Rotterdam is home to a biggest European port and is a second largest city in Netherlands. Situated in Northern Holland on the shore of the North Sea and river Neveu-Maas created in the delta of rivers Rhein and Maas. The climate is temperate with a rather cool summer and mild winter. The average temperature of the warm period is often below 20 degrees while in winter it rarely falls below zero.
History and facts
Rotterdam was founded in the 13th century by the dams where the small river Rotte flows into the Meuse. The name of the city can be translated as "Rotten Dam". Already in 1340 the settlement was granted city rights. Due to its advantageous location Rotterdam quickly became one of the largest Dutch ports. In 1360 the city walls began to be erected.
In 1572 Rotterdam was plundered by the Spaniards. In the early 17th century a new large port was built. Soon enough Rotterdam has become one of the most important and largest ports in Europe which still remains. At the beginning of the 20th century the city fortifications were demolished which hindered the city's growth. During the First World War Rotterdam acted as a base of special services. In May 1940 German troops bombed the city center.

Rotterdam is most enjoyable from May till October. In the winter despite non freezing temperatures the city is extremely windy.

The airport is located 6 km north of Rotterdam. There are direct flights to major cities in Germany, Spain, Italy and England. The Amsterdam Schiphol is 58 km away and offers more destinations. You can reach the city from the airport by bus 50.
Rotterdam is a large railway junction. High-speed trains are from Antwerp, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris. Also the city has good road accessibility. Public transportation is provided by subway, buses and trams.
