History and facts
Nottingham was founded in the 7th century by the Saxons. In the Anglo-Saxon period was part of the kingdom of Mercia. During the Roman period a busy road passed around the modern city. Later Nottingham was conquered by the Normans. During the Middle Ages the city occupied the space between the castle and the old market square. It is now the historic center of Nottingham. Upon his return from the campaign of King Richard the Lionheart his troops besieged Nottingham and took the fortress. In medieval legends, Nottingham Castle becomes the site of a confrontation between noble robber Robin Hood and a local sheriff.
By the 15th century Nottingham had become a successful trading city. During the Industrial Revolution it was one of the centers of the British textile industry. Nottingham's industrial development lasted until World War II. City status was conferred on June 18, 1897.
