Mainz
Mainz is a city in western Germany, the capital of the Rhineland-Palatinate. Located at the mouth of the River Main, flowing into the Rhine. Mainz is one of the oldest cities in Germany with a history of 2000 years. It is one of the main cultural centers of the country in which Gutenberg invented printing. The city has a small but beautiful Altstadt, and a walk along the Rhine will give you real pleasure.
Mainz is located on the west (left) bank of the Rhine about midway between the North Sea and Lake Constance. The elevation difference is from 82 meters to 249 meters above sea level. The annual rainfall is just over 600 mm, the average annual temperature being 10.1 ° C. summer is warm and humid winter is mild.
History and facts
Mainz's history began more than 2000 years ago when in the 13th century BC. a Roman camp was founded here. Soon the city became one of the most important Roman settlements to the north of the Alps near Trier. In 1990 Mainz became the capital of the province of Upper Germany. Despite the city wall built in the 3rd century in the 4th century the city was destroyed by alemans and in the early 5th century by vandals.
At the end of the 5th century Mainz became part of the Frankish kingdom. In the 8th century the city became one of Europe's largest Christian religious centers thanks to St. Boniface. In the 9-10th century the archbishops of Mainz not only ruled it but also had a tremendous influence in the region. For several centuries several coronations have even been held here.
In 1244 Mainz received the rights of a free city which ensured its continued prosperity. In 1450 Johann Gutenberg invented Printing. This invention is considered one of the most significant in the Middle Ages. In the mid-16th century the old city walls were rebuilt. Nevertheless by the early 20th century this fact had significantly impeded the growth of the city. During the Thirty Years' War Mainz was captured by the Swedes. In the 18th century the city was exposed to the baroque. At that time many beautiful baroque buildings were built in Mainz.

The nearest airport is Frankfurt am Main Airport. From there the S8 train to Wiesbaden takes you to Mainz in about half an hour. You can also get to the city by regional trains leaving for Koblenz and Saarbrücken.
