Livorno
Livorno is a town in Central Italy in a province of Tuscany. It's the biggest port in Tuscany established in the Eastern part of Ligurian Sea. Livorno is a town that was completely design and built in the 16th century. You won't find ancient medieval town center like in Florence, Pisa or Siena. It's a dynamic sea port which often plays a role of big a tourist hub. Despite that Livorno has few great sights and numerous canals crossing the city reminding you of Venice.
Geography and climate
Livorno is located in the west of Tuscany on the coast of the Ligurian Sea (part of the Mediterranean). The city is located near the Arno River Delta. Canals are connected to the river Livorno. The terrain is mostly flat. The climate is Mediterranean. The summers are warm and not as hot as in the rest of Tuscany and the winters are mild with rare negative temperatures. Most precipitation falls from October to December.
General information
History
In the first half of the 11th century there was a tiny fishing village on Livorno. In the 12th century these lands belonged to Pisa. In the 14th century Lebanese peasants began to strengthen their settlements and then sold it to the Visconti family. Between 1407 and 1421 these territories belonged to Genoa. Further control of the mouth of the Arno was obtained by Florence.
The city of Livorno owes its appearance to the Medici family. It was this influential aristocratic family who made the decision to settle the Tuscany gates after the Pisa Bay was polluted. By the 17th century Livorno had become one of the largest commercial ports in the Mediterranean.
Further development of the city continued in the 18th century during the ownership of the Ligurian coast of the Habsburgs. During World War II Livorno was hit hard by the bombing.

The nearest airport is Pisa Airport. There are regular bus and rail connections between Livorno and Pisa / Florence. Livorno also has a ferry service to Barcelona, Palermo, Bastia.
