History and facts

The territory of modern Antalya has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. In ancient times these lands belonged to the Hittites in the Hellenistic period - Lycia and Pamphilia. In the era of the kingdom of Pergamon in the 2nd century BC the city of Attalia was founded which was conquered by the Romans four centuries later. The Roman Emperor Adrian even made it his winter residence.

After the fall of the Roman Empire Antalya became part of Byzantium. In the 8th century earthquakes attacks by Arabs and pirates led to the decay of the city and the region. Despite the constant threat of conquest by the Seljuks from the 9th century to the beginning of the 13th century Antalya belonged to the Byzantine Empire.

In 1423 the city was conquered by the Ottoman Turks. During the Ottoman Empire Antalya was an important trading city and a major port. After the First World War the city was occupied by Italy for some time. Now Antalya is one of Turkey's fastest growing cities and the most popular Turkish resort.
Shopping

The most popular souvenirs are carpets, amulets of sham (Nazar), leather goods, shoes and aromatic herbs. There are a lot of shops on the coast with replicas of famous brands. When shopping at such stores we recommend bargaining. Bargaining can sometimes reduce the cost of goods by 40-50%.
